In 1956 Nan's husband took a job with a international crane company. They wanted him to begin to computerize the heavy equipment to do more work with less stress on the operator of the equipment. This was the beginning of the computer age and he was the man for the job.
Nan packed up her children (at the time 7) and moved 42 miles away from her mother, father, brother, sisters and friends. I probably did not mention she was pregnant again. In those days 42 miles was like a 100 miles today. If you move the children to go to see Nana and PopPop (her parents) you had to pack playpens, strollers, clothes and diapers. All diapers at this time were cloth. I do not believe we had a diaper service to pick up the dirty ones and drop off the clean ones.
We moved next to a house that had a chicken coop in the back yard. There were about 2 dozen chickens and they sold the eggs and the baby chicks. They were an older couple and there was a fence between our yards. In order for us not to go over the fence it should have been 10 feet tall and barbed wire. It did not and they never saw us coming. The chicken coop was padlocked and sometime they would leave it open by mistake. Have you ever been near a chicken coop in the summer. Even if it was cleaned ever hour it still smelled from 2 blocks away. If we got into the chicken coop when they were not looking we had shit all over out clothes, shoes, skin and hair. Even if we tried to hose off the smell it did not work. We lived there for 5 years.
One day my father brought home a huge male boxer dog. He was watching the dog for two weeks for his boss. He told his boss the kids would be happy to take care of the dog. We already had 3 cats, a female Weimaraner named Baby Cakes. Our job was to keep the two dogs apart. The female was not neutered and the boxer was named Champ. One day when we can home from school we saw the two dogs in a strange position. Champ was humping Baby Cakes and his penis got stuck in her female party for over an hour. Nan walked out the back door with a huge carving knife in her hand, a baby on one hip and she screamed at all of us to get inside. The dogs were running in circles, Champ his two legs on Baby Cake's back and two legs behind her. Baby Cakes was whining and crying as she saw Nan walking toward them. Nan was about to chop off Champ's male organ when they suddenly and magically separated. We all ran outside screaming and clapping. Nan went back inside to make dinner.
We only had Champ two weeks and Baby Cakes ran away 2 months later. We never got to see the litter of puppies. They would have been so cute. I don't blame Baby Cakes for running away she never had a moments peace before we went to school or anytime for that matter.
